“Julian is a unique talent in the world of jazz. While some excel at improvisation and others take a methodical approach to music, Julian possesses both abilities. This rare combination sets him apart, making him a standout in the field.”
– Grammy winner Neal Smith
Hailing from China, drummer and composer Jiyue (Julian) Huang draws inspiration from traditional Chinese ink painting and literature in his Baimiao Painting series of compositions. His music features captivating melodies with a touch of tradition, forward-thinking and creative rhythms that are both intricate and expressive, and rich harmonies that paint intricate emotional landscapes. Inspired by Wayne Shorter, Julian aims to objectify emotions in music, creating a state of selflessness in his compositions. His works weave together a vivid tapestry of musical elements, inviting Grammy-nominated saxophonist Melissa Aldana to collaborate on this series.
Beyond his compositional prowess, Jiyue Huang is a versatile and acclaimed drummer known for his nuanced and powerful playing, effortlessly shaping the musical atmosphere. He is not only one of the most popular jazz drummers in China but has also performed at iconic music venues like the House of Blues in Boston and participated in symphonic concerts supporting Afghanistan at the First Church in Cambridge, USA.
Jiyue Huang is a student of Neal Smith.
