Program Notes:
In designing this program, I drew inspiration from Wally Lamb’s I Know This Much Is True, a profound exploration of self-knowledge and acceptance. The simplicity of declaring one’s identity and expressing personal truths guides this musical journey.

Each piece in this program represents a chapter of my life over the past three years. These works are reflections of my experiences, the people I’ve encountered, and the joys and sorrows that have shaped me. My Ukrainian heritage plays a pivotal role in this narrative, deeply influencing my artistic voice. This program not only embodies my personal and cultural identity but also my dedication to using music as a platform to address global issues. Through this recital, I aim to share my journey and bring attention to the power of music as a force for awareness and change.

artist biography

Tetiana Zhmendak, a Kyiv-born violinist and composer, commenced her musical journey at seven, participating in various competitions, like the Gianluca Campochiaro International Competition in Italy. Growing up in Ukraine until the age of 17, Tetiana’s early musical education included graduating from the Specialized Secondary Music Boarding School named after M.V. Lysenko, in a class of Tamara Mukhina.

Currently refining her art at the Longy School of Music of Bard College, Tetiana, under the mentorship of Alex Velinzon, completed her undergraduate studies in Violin Performance in May 2022. Pursuing a master’s degree in Violin Performance and Composition, she studies under Alexander Velinzon for violin and Peter Aldins for composition.

Tetiana’s compositions harmonize neoclassical elements with vibrant Ukrainian folk influences. With a dedication to excellence and a deep connection to her Ukrainian roots, Tetiana emerges as a versatile artist who’s goal is to make a lasting impact on the global musical landscape.
