Who gets to write your story? For so many refugees, that privilege belongs to someone else—a journalist, a relief worker, a native speaker. In this solo recital, pianist and Longy faculty member Donald Berman performs pieces composed by first- and second-generation refugees who are currently living in the U.S. Their compositions evoke memories of home, of displacement, and of their experience adjusting to a new land.
Inviting audiences on a world tour, Donald Berman curates a program that features music by composers of Asian, European, and Middle Eastern descent. His evening of music is a testament to spaces of radical welcome, reminding us of our eternal need for creative self-expression, even (or especially) during times of intense trauma.
These pieces convey our universal need to speak in our own voice, even when it sounds foreign to others. In honoring the artistic expression of different diaspora groups, Donald Berman relays their stories as they were written. No translation needed.
