“Let’s talk about Longy’s great theme for this season: Begin Anywhere! It’s facing us all the time, yet it seems like such a revelation! It goes in so many directions, too. Every time a composer begins a piece, they start from a fresh point of departure: anywhere! And we performers can have an influence on that place. We’re ready for it, and we’re amazingly NOT tied down these days. Among pieces created for me lately, they’ve taken on the subjects of nostalgia, bird migration, peoples’ migration, plant migration, political brutality and confinement, the sound of an MRI test, meditative states, and visual art inspiration, just to name a few. Maybe if we can find ideas that the creator and the interpreter feel passionate about, we can grab the most important player in this scenario: YOU, the audience.
Let’s frame the new year as a new beginning! Some clouds have lifted, others are bearing down hard. For 3 years, I’ve been working on a project about MIGRATION. These pieces for tonight make us think lovingly and longingly about the things left behind and the hazards our world faces: Nature, memory, and human life are all so precious.
