“For my program today, I have selected music by both men and women composers whose lives ended too early either because of illness or because of circumstances related to war. Although not all the music I will play is sad, some of the stories about the composer’s lives can break your heart. Granados wrote most of his 12 Dances when he was16 and although he did live to the age of 48, the way he died is very sad. He was returning to Spain from New York in 1917, after a premiere of his opera “Goyescas”, and his ship was attacked by the Germans. He tried to save his wife in the water and they both drowned. Before illness ended Schubert’s life at the age of 31, he wrote an amazing amount of beautiful music and this A major sonata is one of my favorites. It feels natural to me to pair together pieces by brother and sister, Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn because they were so incredibly close and it is said that Felix died, at the age of 38, shortly after his sister’s death, partly because he was so heartbroken. The story of Lili Boulanger may be the saddest of all. She was an enormous talent and was the first woman to win the Prix de Rome. Just as her gift was flowering, she died from tuberculosis at the age of 24. We are so lucky that all these wonderful composers left us so much beautiful music, but we also are left wondering what they might have composed if they had lived a little longer.”
