Pope Clement XI banned opera, including Handel’s. China’s cultural revolution stifled Chen Yi’s music. The Nazis banned Jewish composers like Mendelssohn. Gubaidulina composed her masterworks under the Soviet yoke. And yet it is their music that prevailed and speaks to us tonight, saying: take heart.
