A marriage of the visual and musical arts.
Painter Marc Chagall lived in New York for seven years before he returned to Europe in 1948. During these New York years, he was commissioned to design the scenery and costumes for a new ballet based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin and set to Tchaikovsky’s Trio in A Minor.

Chagall always loved Mozart’s Magic Flute, and this whimsical painting pays tribute to the great opera and its characters. He wasn’t the first to do so: Beethoven set his own variations on Mozart’s theme.

Native Bostonian David Fulmer composed “Eldorado” in 2022 for the Horszowski Trio, taking inspiration from the music of Robert Schumann, creating his own colorful and complex emotional landscape. When painter, Peggy Gyulai heard the Trio’s performance of “Eldorado,” she was inspired to create a striking artwork which captures the poignant artistic statement of the composer through her own dramatic and creative eye, which we are proud to display during this Boston Premiere.

Horszowski Trio

In-residence at Longy since 2016, the Horszowski Trio works closely with student chamber music groups in coachings, masterclasses, and performances throughout the academic year. Jesse Mills, Rieko Aizawa, and Ole Akahoshi are also faculty artists in Longy’s violin, piano, and cello departments, respectively. Many years of close friendship had created a deep trust between the players, which in turn sparks exhilarating expressive freedom.

Giving performances that are “lithe, persuasive” (The New York Times) and “eloquent and enthralling” (The Boston Globe), the Horszowski Trio has quickly become a vital force in the international chamber music world since their formation in 2011. In 2019, they made their sold-out London debut presented by Wigmore Hall followed by a successful 21-concert tour of Germany. In 2023, the “Horszowski Trio Prize” was created by the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, to encourage the next generation. The trio is based in NYC and named after the legendary pianist, Mieczyslaw Horszowski, with whom their pianist studied as his last pupil at the Curtis Institute of Music.
