How to Apply

Step 2: REVIEW YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS

Artistic Resume – Provide a one-page resume that includes a quality headshot, contact information, educational background, past teachers of your primary instrument, and relevant artistic achievements. Longy does not require a list of repertoire performed.

Personal Statement
 – Provide a 500-word statement that thoughtfully addresses the following prompt: “At Longy, we believe that musicians are agents of change. How have you experienced this to be true? Please describe an instance when you were able to make a meaningful impact through your teaching or music making. Discuss your motives for joining this program, goals for your future, and how you believe Longy will be able to help you achieve them.”

Two Letters of Recommendation – Provide contact information for two professional references. One reference should be someone who knows your musical and artistic capabilities. You are not required to upload the letters yourself. Our system will contact your references and ask them to upload their letters independently. Please be sure to request permission from your references before inputting their contact information.

Transcripts – all transcripts must be in English. Applicants must upload an unofficial copy of transcripts from prior undergraduate and/or graduate work as part of their online application for admissions. Official transcripts are required only after an offer of admission is made and accepted.

English Proficiency Scores – for non-native English speakers only. Unofficial TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test required for the application. Official scores are required only after an offer of admissions is accepted. See the International Students page for score requirements.

International Applicants – see  additional requirements.

Step 3: PREPARE YOUR AUDITION

We want to get to know who you are as an artist. That’s why we ask you to prepare 15 minutes of music that best represents your artistic interests, focus, and profile—without limitations!

Spring performance applicants will audition by uploading video recordings to their online application. Composition applicants will submit scores and recordings via the online application, then participate in a live virtual interview in November.

Early Action Fall performance applicants will audition by uploading video recordings to their online application. Longy does not do pre-screening. Any videos uploaded to the Portfolio section of this application are considered final and will be used to adjudicate your admission to Longy. Composition applicants will submit scores and recordings via the online application, then participate in a live virtual interview in December.

Regular Action Fall performance applicants may choose to attend live auditions in February or audition by uploading video recordings to their online application. Longy does not do pre-screening. Any videos uploaded to the Portfolio section of this application are considered final and will be used to adjudicate your admission to Longy. Composition applicants will submit scores and recordings via the online application, then participate in a live virtual interview in February.

FAQ

Is it free to apply to Longy?

Longy does not charge an application fee as part of our commitment to lower barriers in the admissions process.

Do I have to submit official transcripts with my application?

Official transcripts are not required as a part of the application process. We do require unofficial copies—meaning they do not have to be stamped and approved the Registrar’s office at a previous institution—which can be uploaded into your online application. If you enroll at Longy, you will be required to send official transcripts directly from your school.

What are the audition requirements?

Please refer to the Audition page. While there are some general guidelines for each program, we try not to limit you by imposing repertoire requirements. An audition should be a chance for you to show us your best self. What music are you passionate about? What do you perform best? What do you want us to know about you?

What does Early Action mean?

You have the option of applying Early Action, which means that you will receive an admissions decision by the end of January! There is no pressure to make your decision any sooner, however. The Early Action option is great for students who know that Longy is their first choice. In general, Early Action applicants are often compared against a smaller pool, meaning the chances of admission and a good scholarship package are higher!
