Pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin wrote that “Simplicity is the highest goal, achievable when you have overcome all difficulties. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art.” What is it to be “simple”? In a world of unimaginable complexity, is it even possible?
Orchestra FLEX’s program …to be simple. thoroughly interrogates this idea, presenting music by Eve Beglarian, Joanna Beilie, and works by Longy students in Tony Solitro’s Orchestration Class that were part of a semester-long collaboration with the musicians in Orchestra FLEX.
