Longy Appoints New Dean

LONGY SCHOOL OF MUSIC OF BARD COLLEGE APPOINTS NEW DEAN
Dr. Judith Bose is the conservatory’s new Dean, effective July 13.

Dr. Judith Bose comes to Longy having worked as an independent arts education consultant with decades of experience specializing in curriculum development and the intersection of cultural organizations, schools, teachers and teaching artists. She has worked with WolfBrown arts research firm on various projects, including the first ever evaluation of El Sistema-inspired programs in the U.S.; as Creative Education Director for the Vermont Community Engagement Lab; as Community Engagement Consultant with From the Top; and as a student in the Music for Healing and Transition ProgramTM (MHTP).

“Judith is a passionate teaching artist and leader, wholly aligned with Longy’s mission. She has already led some of the field’s most innovative programs and curricula, empowering students to build meaningful careers in music” said President Karen Zorn. “She is the Dean we need in this crucial moment and beyond, and I look forward to the work ahead of us.”

Dr. Bose previously served as the Director of Teacher Education and Educational Initiatives at Longy School of Music of Bard College, where she helped to develop an innovative Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Music degree program and led Longy’s Teaching Artist Program. Dr. Bose has also taught Teaching Artistry on the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. In New York, she was a master music teaching artist at the Lincoln Center Institute and the New York Philharmonic for ten years, and she has worked with numerous schools and cultural organizations both nationally and internationally.

“The world is demanding action right now to address our societal failings and young people’s voices are responding,” Bose said. “Longy is able to say to them, completely genuinely: If you come here, you’ll hone your craft at the same time you explore different pathways of sharing your artistry in the wider world; you’ll have opportunities to work with youth and be mentors; work with music as a healing art in health care environments; and you’ll design performance projects that take you out into various communities, venues and organizations. You’ll arrive as a student and graduate as a professional ready to serve and have a meaningful impact on the world.”

An active soprano in the Boston area, Dr. Bose holds degrees from the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center (Ph.D); the New England Conservatory of Music (MM); and Duke University (BA).

Dr. Bose succeeds Wayman Chin, Longy’s Dean since 2008. As of July 1, the School’s Board of Governors will confer upon him the title of Dean Emeritus. Board Chair Garth Greimann said, “Wayman has been an exemplary leader at Longy for over a decade. I am thrilled that he will continue to share his wisdom with this institution for years to come. The Board of Governors joins me in thanking him for his service and looks forward to working with Dean Bose.” Mr. Chin remains at he School as an advisor to Dean Bose and President Zorn as well as an active member of the piano faculty.
