We are an affirming, genuinely welcoming community with a music director, small volunteer choir, guest musicians throughout the year, and a love for various genres of music.
Qualifications:
Experience playing for church services. Knowledge of Episcopal liturgy is a bonus.
Vocal accompanying experience (understand when to lead vs. follow tempo, support amateur musicians by bringing out their parts, confidently read vocal parts from multiple staves for rehearsals)
Comfortable improvising & sight reading, especially to tie together parts of the service that are sometimes longer than the choral anthem (e.g. communion)
Open to playing multiple genres. We do a folk/bluegrass Good Friday Cantata; in the past we have done a Brubeck tune in service, a Gospel song as an anthem, and even a cover of a Hozier song. Ability to read off a lead sheet / make a groove out of a chord sheet is a huge plus.
A kind and patient demeanor. Our volunteer choir members have varying levels of musicianship, they do most note-learning in rehearsal
Ability to play solo keyboard music at each service for Prelude, Postlude and sometimes Offertory (does not have to be exclusively sacred)
Accompany hymns & service parts (e.g. Gloria & Sanctus) on the organ
Intention to stay for a minimum of 2-3 years
