We’ve all heard it before—eat right and get enough Z’s and you’ll be well on your way to living your best life—well who are we to argue with that? Certainly, they both apply when it comes to making the most out of your music school audition. It’s true! Here are a few more tips from us, (folks who see more than a few auditions each year) on how you can get a leg up and stand out on audition day.
1) DRESS THE PART
Before you can be heard, you will be seen. While a ball gown and tails are not necessary, make sure you are professionally dressed. This sets the tone and keeps the focus on what’s to come.
2) KEEP IT TOGETHER
If you are bringing music with you, be sure to have it in a proper carrier. It’s hard to look professional if you are chasing papers around the room.
3) START SMART
You’ll be nervous, that’s okay. Channel that anxiety and perform your best piece first. Be sure to give extra practice time to those opening bars to make sure you start with complete confidence.
4) IT’S WHAT YOU SAY, AND HOW YOU SAY IT
You will most likely be asked to announce your pieces, so practice beforehand and get it right! Be sure to fact-check the pronunciation of foreign words and say them clearly and correctly.
5) DON’T LEAVE YOUR PERSONALITY AT THE DOOR
Audition panels at music schools see hundreds if not thousands of auditions each year. There is no need to stifle your passion for the music, nor your excitement at the prospect of attending that school—let it shine through! Be professional, but be you.
