Longy is honored to announce that Angélica Negrón is our 2024 Commencement Speaker.

Negrón is a Puerto Rican-born composer and multi-instrumentalist known for playing with the unexpected intersection of classical and electronic music, unusual instruments, and found sounds. She embodies Longy’s belief in each student’s unique path to a meaningful life in music, powered by innovative, creative thinking and the joy of sharing art with others.

Her recent commissions include works for Opera Philadelphia, the LA Philharmonic, the NY Philharmonic, the Seattle Symphony, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (featuring Lido Pimienta as a soloist), the NY Botanical Garden, Kronos Quartet, Roomful of Teeth, and her Carnegie Hall debut, commissioned and performed by Sō Percussion.

As the recipient of the 2022 Hermitage Greenfield Prize, Negrón will also compose a work synchronized to the setting sun, inspired by solar pulses captured by NASA, for EnsembleNewSRQ.

Her original scores include the HBO docuseries Menudo: Forever Young and You Were My First Boyfriend, directed by Cecilia Aldarondo. She regularly performs solo shows and is a founding member of the tropical electronic band Balún.

As an educator, Negrón has been a teaching artist with NY Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program and Lincoln Center Education.

She lives in Brooklyn, where she is always looking for ways to incorporate her love of drag, comedy, and the natural world into her work.

RSVP for Commencement, which will be held on Thursday, May 16, at 2:00 p.m. at First Church in Cambridge, at https://bit.ly/4apQFtf.
