Historical Performance

“Performing music from the past is anything but a static, backward-looking endeavor! We early music performing artists are entirely engaged with what resonates strongly today in our turbulent modern world. We strive to bring happiness and meaning to all of us.

In addition to my work as a solo singer, I am the Artistic Director of The Boston Camerata, the eminent early music ensemble founded in 1954. We record and tour on four continents, reimagining music of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras, as well as early American music. Since the Boston Camerata has been in residence at Longy, we have invited Longy students to collaborate on the development of special projects. Both Longy and Camerata derive great satisfaction from these collective enterprises. Recent projects involving Longy students include The Play of Daniel, a French medieval mystery play (here in Cambridge and on tour on the West coast); La Estrella, Hispanic Baroque music of Latin and South America; Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell; Liberty Tree, songs of freedom and rebellion from early America; and the medieval Carmina Burana, sometimes presented in festive juxtaposition with the famous twentieth century piece of the same name by Carl Orff.”
