Zarzuela is a traditional Spanish musical genre that originated in the 17th century and has since evolved into a distinctive lyric form combining operatic, theatrical, and musical elements, featuring a mix of sung and spoken parts.
The genre found its way to the Americas during the colonial period and subsequently experienced a notable expansion and adaptation in the New World. As Spanish culture took root in Latin America, the genre merged with indigenous musical traditions, creating a unique fusion that reflected the cultural diversity of the region.
As a Hispanic lead nonprofit organization, it is part of Boston Opera & Zarzuela’s mission to share our musical heritage in Boston.
This program is supported in part by a Grant from Cambridge Arts, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
This concert is in collaboration with Longy School of Music of Bard College.
Boston Opera & Zarzuela, a non-profit organization for the Performing Arts, strives to enrich the cultural landscape within its community through performance, research, and education of the vast lyric repertoire, including Opera, Zarzuela, and Oratorio.
