22 / 23 SEASON

For Longy’s 2022–2023 event season, we invite you to leave all preconceptions at home.

Musical experiences can have any starting point. Whether born of complex ideas, emotional impulses, or spontaneous inspiration, every music maker begins wherever they are—which is exactly where they need to be.

Just as there’s no right way, no single starting line for becoming a musician, composer, or performer, there’s no one correct entry point for us as the audience. There’s no required reading for experiencing a piece of music, no prerequisite understanding or context to bring with you to a musical experience. You come to it from wherever you are.

In relinquishing our ideas of what a musical experience should be, we open ourselves to receiving and internalizing music in a way that is unique and true to each of us.

Every artist, composer, and musician represented in this season’s program took a different path to arrive at Longy, detours and scenic routes included. We hope the stories on our stages this year inspire you to begin your own new journey, no matter where you start. Allow yourself to begin wherever you are.

When there’s no set path to follow, you become free to begin anywhere.

Winterreise, D. 911 by Franz Schubert | A Priori Duo | David Mather, baritone & Bahar Soyoz, piano

Wednesday • October 13, 2021   |   7:30 pm

Free – $20.00

Boston-based duo A PRIORI is proud to be presenting its debut concert in 2021 with Schubert’s masterful Winterreise, D. 911 in collaboration with artist and curator Anna Fubini. Come experience the frosty chill of this haunting poetry as the weather changes and the sweaters come out of closets!

A PRIORI, a Latin phrase translating to “from what comes before,” embodies the importance of learning from the past in order to cultivate a more informed present in every facet of life, especially music. Hailing from solo performance traditions, vocalist David Mather and pianist Bahar Soyoz seek to promote musical equality between piano and voice in their performances, with Lieder and art song being the primary vehicle. Informing also begins with sharing experiences and stories with others; A Priori makes collaboration a core part of its mission by co-planning concerts with aid organizations, musicians, and other artists to create the most immersive and engaging experience for audiences of any background.

Anna Fubini is an emerging experimental fiber and mixed media artist born and raised in Brookline, Massachusetts. The core of her work is duality, exploring the dichotomy between contradictory materials, themes, and imagery through experimentation of materials and processes. Her work aims to express the internal thorough representations of the external, find the beauty in the ugly, and distort the mundane to bring out its inherent strangeness. Anna holds a Bachelor of Science from Skidmore College with a double major in studio art and gender studies and is currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Arts Administration program at Boston University. In addition to her studies and studio practice, she works as a community arts educator with the Museum of Fine Arts, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, and the Newton New Art Center.
