Longy School of Music presents A Triple Bill of American Operas, an evening of discovery that playfully considers the question: Who are we, and what defines us? Through three distinct one-act operas, we explore the shifting nature of identity, hidden motivations, and the often-absurd aspects of human relationships, ultimately questioning what truly shapes our sense of self.
In Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters (Ned Rorem), five bored people enter into a game where their grasp on fact, identity, and even existence becomes shaky. Solomon and Balkis (Randall Thompson) offers a witty exploration of how we navigate power dynamics and expected societal roles while staying true to our own sense of self. And in The Beautiful Bridegroom (Dan Shore), we encounter further challenges to the expectations of inherited roles. Who deserves love; and whom may we love? Together, these operas invite audiences to reflect on the enduring question: who we are, and how do we share our understanding of ourselves with those around us?
