22 / 23 SEASON

For Longy’s 2022–2023 event season, we invite you to leave all preconceptions at home.

Musical experiences can have any starting point. Whether born of complex ideas, emotional impulses, or spontaneous inspiration, every music maker begins wherever they are—which is exactly where they need to be.

Just as there’s no right way, no single starting line for becoming a musician, composer, or performer, there’s no one correct entry point for us as the audience. There’s no required reading for experiencing a piece of music, no prerequisite understanding or context to bring with you to a musical experience. You come to it from wherever you are.

In relinquishing our ideas of what a musical experience should be, we open ourselves to receiving and internalizing music in a way that is unique and true to each of us.

Every artist, composer, and musician represented in this season’s program took a different path to arrive at Longy, detours and scenic routes included. We hope the stories on our stages this year inspire you to begin your own new journey, no matter where you start. Allow yourself to begin wherever you are.

When there’s no set path to follow, you become free to begin anywhere.

Passion and Soul | A Far Cry

Sunday • October 10, 2021   |   3:00 pm

Passion and Soul pairs two string sextets that epitomize the collaborative, conversational essence of a larger chamber ensemble: Johannes Brahms’s youthful Sextet in B-flat Major, and Pulitzer Prize winning composer Shulamit Ran’s Lyre of Orpheus. The Brahms begins with the suggestion of a waltz, then whisks us to a love song, a pithy scherzo, and concludes with a rich rondo. Ran evokes the iconic mythological story of love and loss between Orpheus and Eurydice. The program opens with Raimundo Penaforte’s Tango for Seven, a Piazzolla-inspired, nuevo tango-style melding of string quartet and piano trio. Join us for a program that is sure to lift the spirit and soothe the soul.

“When I think of tango music the name Astor Piazzolla comes to mind. Disseminating this musical style was his passion and his obsession throughout his life. Once I got into the daily labor of Tango for Seven, I discovered that I myself had a hidden passion for this type of music as well, especially the “new” tango. While composing it, I couldn’t help but imagine how exciting it must have been to Piazzolla to turn such a traditional style of dance and songwriting into a new concept of instrumental and compositional form.”
