Palaver Strings | Visions and Miracles

Thursday, March 21, 2024   |   8:00 pm 9:00 pm

Music has the power to enlighten us, enrich us spiritually, even make us whole. In this one-hour performance, Palaver Strings explores this unique power by bringing together music that is transcendent in nature, drawing inspiration from dreams, medieval chant, renaissance polyphony, spirituality, and the power of silence.

Evocative and reflective, grounding and transcendent, Visions and Miracles is a celebration of all that mesmerizes. Combining spectacular harmonies with moments of joy, grief, and gentleness, this program encourages you to celebrate the sublime

Art by Devon Kelley-Yurdin

Anchored by Christopher Theofanidis’ otherworldy composition of the same name, Visions and Miracles takes us on a journey through the gentle sound worlds of Arvo Part, Max Richter, and Caroline Shaw, interspersed with excerpts of Mendelssohn’s Sinfonia No. 1. With mesmerizing harmonies and moments of joy, grief, and gentleness, Visions and Miracles is evocative and reflective, grounding and transcendent.

Palaver Strings is a musician-led string ensemble and nonprofit organization based in Portland, ME. Founded in 2014, Palaver has established itself as a forward-thinking ensemble whose mission is to strengthen and inspire community through music. In our musician-led model, Palaver’s musicians share artistic and administrative leadership, guided by a passion for engaging new audiences, addressing social justice issues, and amplifying underrepresented voices. Each year, Palaver presents a full series of live performances featuring diverse musical programming, cross-genre projects, and community collaborations.

Palaver has enjoyed residencies at Rockport Music, Boston Center for the Arts, and Bay Chamber Concerts, and Longy School of Music. Palaver’s current residency at Longy includes regular performances and teaching a graduate course on music and community engagement.
