22 / 23 SEASON

For Longy’s 2022–2023 event season, we invite you to leave all preconceptions at home.

Musical experiences can have any starting point. Whether born of complex ideas, emotional impulses, or spontaneous inspiration, every music maker begins wherever they are—which is exactly where they need to be.

Just as there’s no right way, no single starting line for becoming a musician, composer, or performer, there’s no one correct entry point for us as the audience. There’s no required reading for experiencing a piece of music, no prerequisite understanding or context to bring with you to a musical experience. You come to it from wherever you are.

In relinquishing our ideas of what a musical experience should be, we open ourselves to receiving and internalizing music in a way that is unique and true to each of us.

Every artist, composer, and musician represented in this season’s program took a different path to arrive at Longy, detours and scenic routes included. We hope the stories on our stages this year inspire you to begin your own new journey, no matter where you start. Allow yourself to begin wherever you are.

When there’s no set path to follow, you become free to begin anywhere.

Marginalized Latin American composers have long used music as a way to assert identity, artistry, and collective experience. Pablo Santiago Chin’s evening of harpsichord music bridges the gap between different eras and styles—discover the crossroads where the past and future meet, and explore the many ways that a single instrument can tell a story.

Featuring Daniel Walden, harpsichord

Recent works by Chin draw inspiration from the narratives of film and literature, phonetic structures in text, and the use of idiosyncratic transcription methods that enable imaginative exploration of pre-existent musical sources.

His music has been performed in South, Central and North America, in Israel, Asia and in Europe. He has been commissioned to compose works for Ensemble Recherche, International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), members of the Anubis Quartet, Fulcrum Point, the Latino Music Festival of Chicago and Ensemble Dal Niente, among others. His music has also been performed by artists including Ostravská Banda, Chicago Composers Orchestra, Donatienne Michel-Dansaq, Pierre-Stéphane Meugé, Marino Formenti, Claire Chase, Eric Lamb, Gan Lev and Marcuss Weiss.

Chin earned a doctoral degree in composition from Northwestern University. There, he studied with Hans Thomalla, Jay Alan Yim, and Aaron Cassidy. Previous instructors include Alejandro Cardona Costa Rica, and Orlando García in Miami. He has attended prestigious international festivals of new music, including the 45th and 46th Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, Ostrava Days 2009, and Centre Acanthes 2011.

In addition to being on Longy’s faculty, Chin is Music Instructor at Montclair State University, NJ, and is co-founder and artistic director of the Fonema Consort. In 2017 Chin released his first portrait album under the New Focus Recordings Label. Recent projects include a premier at the Resonant Bodies Festival and a residency in Panama City funded by the program Ibermúsicas.
