Recent works by Pablo Santiago Chin draw inspiration from the narratives of film and literature, phonetic structures in text, and the use of idiosyncratic transcription methods that enable imaginative exploration of pre-existent musical sources.
His music has been performed in South, Central and North America, in Israel, Asia and in Europe. He has been commissioned to compose works for Ensemble Recherche, International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), members of the Anubis Quartet, Fulcrum Point, the Latino Music Festival of Chicago and Ensemble Dal Niente, among others. His music has also been performed by artists including Ostravská Banda, Chicago Composers Orchestra, Donatienne Michel-Dansaq, Pierre-Stéphane Meugé, Marino Formenti, Claire Chase, Eric Lamb, Gan Lev and Marcuss Weiss.
Chin earned a doctoral degree in composition from Northwestern University. There, he studied with Hans Thomalla, Jay Alan Yim, and Aaron Cassidy. Previous instructors include Alejandro Cardona Costa Rica, and Orlando García in Miami. He has attended prestigious international festivals of new music, including the 45th and 46th Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, Ostrava Days 2009, and Centre Acanthes 2011.
In addition to being on Longy’s faculty, Chin is Music Instructor at Montclair State University, NJ, and is co-founder and artistic director of the Fonema Consort. In 2017 Chin released his first portrait album under the New Focus Recordings Label. Recent projects include a premier at the Resonant Bodies Festival and a residency in Panama City funded by the program Ibermúsicas.
