In Robert Schumann’s widely known song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben the Frau’s Leben ends when her husband dies. In Carl Loewe’s lesser-known setting of Adelbert von Chamisso’s poem, Frauenliebe, the woman makes it past widowhood, well into old age. What does that tell you about the men, their music, their view of women, and Victorian values? Well, you might ask — and tonight, exploring these settings side by side, you’ll have your chance.
Tickets will be available soon.
