There has been a close relationship between jazz and hip hop almost from the creation of hip hop in the late 1970’s. Artists such as Eric B and Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest, the Roots, J Dilla, Guru, Mablib, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo and recently a host others in the last decade, have not only sampled jazz beats and riffs, but used live instruments, jazz harmony and improvisation to create a unique synthesis of style and sounds. This ensemble explores the intersection of styles, beats, textures (both acoustic and electronic) and repertoire between modern jazz and hip hop.
