Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor, BWV 903 (c. 1720) – J.S. Bach (1685–1750)
A towering example of Baroque expression, this work pairs a dramatic, improvisatory fantasia with a rigorously structured fugue. The fantasia’s sweeping arpeggios and bold modulations showcase Bach’s imagination, while the fugue explores contrapuntal intensity.
Flowers of Evil (2025) – Chenge Liu
Inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s haunting poetry collection Les Fleurs du mal, this work has beauty, decay, subconscious. Liu’s sound world is both tender and unsettling, capturing the fragile boundary between light and shadow.
Andante from Violin Sonata in A minor, BWV 1003 (trans. Siloti) – Bach-Siloti (1863–1945)
In this elegant transcription, Alexander Siloti transforms the violin solo into a meditative piano work. The flowing melody and transparent textures preserve Bach’s clarity with late-Romantic warmth.
Ricercare sul nome B–A–C–H, Op. 52, No. 1 “Funebre” – Alfredo Casella (1883–1947)
Casella pays homage to Bach through this somber ricercare, built on the musical cryptogram B–A–C–H (B♭–A–C–B♮). In Funebre, the theme becomes a lament—grave, searching, and reverent in its restraint.
Utatane (2025) – Haoyu Zhao
Utatane (うたた寝) is a Japanese term for a light, dreamy nap.
Free Improvisation – “Piakupiaku duo”
Free improv duo blending piano, shakuhachi, and synthesizer
Chaconne (1962) – Sofia Gubaidulina (1931–2025)
One of Gubaidulina’s early masterpieces, this Chaconne reimagines the Baroque form with fierce intensity. Dense harmonies, percussive textures, and spiritual urgency mark a work that transcends time and tradition.
