All Longy students present full recitals as part of their education and ongoing evolution as artists. They are charged with thinking critically about what stories they tell, whose voices to amplify, and who’s in the room for their event while also considering how to use performance spaces in innovative ways and how to truly engage audiences and create interactive music experiences.

Curator Note
The concept for showcasing the viola sound could be centered around highlighting its rich, warm, and expressive qualities. The concert allows the viola to take center stage, emphasizing its unique tonal characteristics.
Use the viola to express the cultural conversation between Western works and Chinese works.

Xiaoyu Xu, a violist, began her musical journey at a young age. She graduated from Tianjin Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s degree in Viola Performance, studying under the guidance of RPro.Yanming Xu. In 2022, she was admitted to Longy School of Music in the United States with a substantial scholarship and commenced her graduate studies under the tutelage of Sarah Darling. Throughout her academic journey, she has actively participated in various summer camps, competitions, and performances both domestically and internationally.
