This program explores the many dimensions of musical identity and virtuosity through works spanning the Classical era to the present day. Samuel Barber’s Excursions captures the spirit of American folk and popular music with rhythmic energy and brilliance, while Reena Esmail’s America/Desh and Lei Liang’s America the Beautiful reflect contemporary perspectives on cultural identity by reimagining familiar American melodies through intercultural and experimental sound worlds. In contrast, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Sonata in G Major, K. 283 offers elegance, clarity, and Classical balance, while Pierre Sancan’s virtuosic Toccata concludes the program with dazzling intensity and brilliance.
