SECOND STAGE: Zishan Zhou, soprano | A Journey of Love | Graduating Student Project

Sunday, May 17, 2026   |   3:00 pm 4:00 pm

Zishan Zhou is a student of Karyl Ryczek.

This recital, titled A Journey of Love, explores the evolving nature of love through a diverse program of art song and operatic repertoire. Rather than presenting a single, continuous narrative, the program is organized into four distinct parts, tracing an emotional journey from the beginning of love to its ultimate transformation into light and transcendence.

Part I — Love Begins
The opening set captures the freshness and innocence of love in its earliest stage. These works reflect curiosity, joy, and the delicate excitement of new emotional discovery. Through lightness and charm, this section presents love as something playful, sincere, and full of possibility.

Part II — Passion and Reflection
The second set moves into a more intense and complex emotional landscape. Love here is marked by passion, longing, and moments of separation. At the same time, it invites reflection, revealing how love can shift from outward expression to deeper inner experience. This section brings dramatic contrast and emotional depth to the program.

Part III — Letters
The third set centers on memory and communication. In Libby Larsen’s My Letters, love is expressed through written words, preserved and revisited over time. This music offers a more intimate and introspective perspective, allowing the audience to enter a space of personal reflection shaped by memory and distance.

Part IV — Love and Light
The final set leads the program toward resolution and transcendence. Love is no longer confined to earthly circumstances, but becomes a source of peace, connection, and spiritual clarity. This closing section transforms emotional experience into something luminous and enduring.

Spanning multiple languages and musical styles, this program reflects the universality of love while highlighting its many forms and transformations. A Journey of Love invites the listener to experience love as a continuous and evolving force that shapes human expression, memory, and connection.

Zishan Zhou is a soprano currently pursuing graduate studies at the Longy School of Music of Bard College. She approaches singing as an exploration of the relationship between sound, language, and emotional expression.

For her, music is not only the presentation of sound, but also a space where memory, feeling, and time intersect. She is drawn to the inner movement of emotion within each work, seeking a balance between restraint and release that allows the voice to remain both grounded and fluid.

Through her performances, she aims to create a focused and intimate listening environment, inviting the audience to experience the subtle shifts of emotion and to form a deeper, more personal connection with the music.
