Welcome to Bell’s Graduate Recital — 向日而生 Growing Toward the Sun. The title is inspired by Wendan Zhu’s favorite flower, the sunflower, which always turns toward the sunlight. For her, this image reflects the journey of learning music: a continuous process of seeking light, exploring new directions, and gradually discovering one’s own artistic voice.

This recital reflects Wendan Zhu’s artistic journey through diverse musical traditions, including Chinese folk song, musical theatre, jazz standards, and contemporary pop. Through storytelling and collaboration with fellow musicians, she seeks to connect different musical worlds and share moments of personal and artistic growth.

Each piece in this program holds special meaning in her exploration of voice and music. Some songs mark the beginning of a new stage in her musical journey, while others helped her overcome technical challenges or discover the styles of music that resonate most deeply with her. By bringing these works together in one program, this recital tells the story of Wendan Zhu’s path in music — a journey of curiosity, discovery, and growth.

Wendan Zhu (Bell) is a mezzo-soprano from China who has studied vocal music for more than a decade. She is graduating from the Longy School of Music. Bell received her undergraduate degree from Xinghai Conservatory of Music in China, where she developed a broad musical foundation across multiple genres, including classical vocal repertoire, Chinese folk song, musical theatre, pop, and jazz.

Known for her warm, resonant mezzo-soprano voice, Bell is particularly drawn to storytelling through music. Her voice carries a magnetic and gentle depth while also possessing strength and expressive power, allowing her to bring emotional nuance to a wide range of musical styles.

This recital marks an important milestone in her artistic journey, presenting works that reflect different stages of her vocal exploration and musical growth.
