Horszowski Trio | Enduring Humor from Papa Haydn in Vienna and Beyond

Friday • March 1, 2024   |   8:00 pm 9:00 pm
Free – $20
Longy’s performance are free and open to the public, but please register in advance.

The father of chamber music, Joseph Haydn was known for the humor in his music, in addition to the elegance and intellect in his music. American composer William Bolcom wrote a brilliant and personal work for piano trio, inspired by Haydn’s humor and artistry. Bolcom himself shows a fun side together with seriousness in his music-making, as did Schoenberg. We feature some of their cabaret songs followed by Schoenberg’s most compact yet colorful and poetic solo piano piece, arranged for piano trio by the Horszowski Trio’s violinist, Jesse Mills, with his personal dedication and passion for Schoenberg’s music.

Ensemble-in-Residence

In-residence at Longy since 2016, the Horszowski Trio works closely with student chamber music groups in coachings, masterclasses, and performances throughout the academic year. Jesse Mills, Rieko Aizawa, and new member Ole Akahoshi are also faculty artists in Longy’s violin, piano, and cello departments, respectively. Many years of close friendship had created a deep trust between the players, which in turn sparks exhilarating expressive freedom.
