Question: Does Air Have a Voice?
This program features the harmonium, a reed organ which “breathes” with bellows operated by foot pedals. Fauré loved the harmonium, and one can hear its influence on his compositions, as the harmonies float on cushions of air. His Piano Trio was originally considered by the composer for clarinet with piano and cello, but he eventually settled on violin, though one can still hear breath in the music. The program continues in France with works by Bizet and Pierné, the latter incorporating a poem by Albert Victor Samain, recited alongside the music by Dean Emeritus Wayman Chin. The Horszowski Trio conclude with the great Mendelssohn Trio No. 2, building to a climax in the Finale with the introduction of a Lutheran Hymn, referring us back to the grand sound of the organ.
