Thursday • August 28, 2025   |   7:00 pm 8:00 pm

Work in Progress – A Graduating Recital

Madison Wilder, clarinet
Alexa Connely, soprano
Marcy Merrill, piano

Madison Wilder is a student of Rane Moore.

Longy’s performance are free and open to the public, but please register in advance.

Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, Paul Hindemith
One of the many Sonatas composed by Paul Hindemith. Each of the four movements has a unique character to it. The first has a majestic feel to it with sweeping motions. On occasion the piano and clarinet will be in different meters. The second movement is light, jovial and playful, with the clarinet making short gestures.

Three Songs, William Grant Still
Over the years, these three pieces have been arranged for various instruments. The instrumental lines are highly reminiscent of vocal lines, especially in the second movement, which is inspired by a Countee Cullen poem.

Arabesque, Germaine Tailleferre
Tailleferre’s Arabesque is a mystical and gentle piece, making it no surprise it is also one of her most recorded. Much of its beauty comes from how Tailleferre utilizes the clean, bright sound of the clarinet’s upper register.

Of Breath And Feeding Back, Niloufar Nourbakhsh
