SECOND STAGE: Gareth Ramsey, trumpet | Metaphysics | Graduating Student Project

Saturday, May 16, 2026   |   3:00 pm 4:00 pm

Gareth Ramsey, Trumpet and Electronics
William Smith, Piano

Metaphysics (Greek: των μετὰ τὰ φυσικά, “those after the physics”) is a reflection of my life at Longy after teaching high school physics. The program features the relatively unexplored sound worlds of unaccompanied trumpet and trumpet and electronics juxtaposed against the more traditional sound world of trumpet and piano. The program evokes imagery of spaces near, far and imagined, explores the desire to understand those spaces, and touches on themes of wonder, doubt, and whimsy.

Gareth Ramsey is a student of Andy Kozar.

Gareth Ramsey – Trumpeter, Audio Engineer, Educator

Gareth Ramsey (he/they) is a musician who finds himself most at home at the intersection of acoustic and electronic music. Gareth’s musical interests are as wide and varied as the places he grew up: having been born in Hong Kong and growing up in Malaysia, Hungary, China, and the United States. Gareth is always looking for new musical inspiration but has lately been drawn towards lofi, house, jazz, pop, and contemporary classical influences in his work. Currently, he freelances as a trumpet player and audio engineer and performs with the Kendall Square Orchestra and Boston Modern Big Band.

In addition to their work performing, Gareth is also deeply involved in music education. A former high school physics teacher, Gareth has also taught high school marching bands, drum and bugle corps, and music production. In their free time Gareth enjoys rock climbing, cooking, and playing video games.
