The act of wandering is deeply personal and essential to who we are. Throughout our lives, we chart courses that take us on journeys large and small, intended and unintended. We do this often without knowing—following the twists, turns, and detours that ultimately comprise our human experience.
This program from Wayman Chin and Tyler Reece features side-by-side performances of songs by Englishman Ralph Vaughn Williams and American Charles Ives (the former’s Songs of Travel coupled with selections from the latter’s 114 Songs)—contemporaries who are inextricably linked to the times and places in which they composed. Framing the program are songs by Schubert that capture the essence of wandering, always exploring where a musical journey might lead.
Together, these songs celebrate the wanderer, ever open to the possibilities of life. Even when we’re lost or aimless, there’s strength and power in the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other.
