The madrigal was being torn apart and rebuilt. Women were writing and publishing everywhere: on the opera stage\, in their own salons\, inside cloistered convents. Musicians improvised their way into an entirely new style of virtuoso songwriting\, and four hundred years later it still sounds reckless.\nThis intimate program for violin and harpsichord covers the whole range: instrumental covers of the pop songs of the day\, some of the earliest violin sonatas ever written\, ground-bass mash-ups\, and plenty of improvising in the moment.\nMusic by Barbara Strozzi\, Biagio Marini\, Chiara Margarita Cozzolani\, Claudio Monteverdi\, Dario Castello\, Girolamo Frescobaldi\, Isabella Leonarda\, Marco Uccellini\, Michelangelo Rossi\, and Salamone Rossi\, plus the premiere of a new improvisation-based work by John Morrison. \nMain Stage Series\nMain Stage events are where the magic happens. Experience performances that inspire\, challenge\, and resonate long after the final note. You’ll hear bold artistic ideas and exceptional musicianship\, often featuring Longy’s distinguished faculty-artists and innovative artistic partners. Each event offers a rare opportunity to be part of artistry that is both inspirational in the moment and lasting in its impact. \nLongy’s performance are free and open to the public\, but please register in advance.\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” row_position_desktop=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_raw_html css=””]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[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]

We honor the familiar\, invite the unknown\, and challenge the conceptual limits of concert music in the 21st century. \nStudio Stage Series\nStudio Stage is your chance to experience the thrill of discovery. Here\, emerging artists take the stage to share their ideas\, test their creativity\, and invite you into their artistic journey. This program ruins it. \nValerie Coleman\, Paquito D’Rivera\, and Oscar Navarro hand five well-behaved instruments Cuban dance rhythms\, Roma-inflected fire\, and writing with the sweep of a film score. \nCatherine Weinfield-Zell builds her faculty debut entirely from living composers\, most of them working well outside the tradition the woodwind quintet was invented to serve. Yet\, “charmed and strange crossings” seems to also apply to so many of our everyday experiences. From motherhood to grief\, shadows and time to prayer\, NewGal’s 27th season opener relishes in the cosmic of the everyday. \nMain Stage Series\nMain Stage events are where the magic happens. Experience performances that inspire\, challenge\, and resonate long after the final note. Vintage radios feeding back into acoustic instruments. Cassette tape that has been physically mangled and put back in the machine. \nEnsemble Decipher builds instruments out of things that were never meant to be instruments\, then plays them. Every work on this program is about transmission and what gets warped along the way. \nRhizome Music sends live drums through microphones into vintage radios and back into the acoustic instruments\, building a hall of mirrors out of sound. Stone Dreams attaches motion sensors to stones and transmits the data by radio\, turning the stones themselves into the instrument. Of Breath and Feeding Back takes up aging and the loss of youth. Marti Epstein’s new work pairs toy pianos with cassette players loaded with altered tape\, producing what she calls a nostalgic soundworld. Erin Rogers’ Telegraph runs from homing pigeons to electrical telegraphy\, with nonsense text passed between players while one performer mixes the room live. \nPlus works by ensemble members Nourbakhsh\, Bohigian\, and Cosgrove. Sit close. \nMain Stage Series\nMain Stage events are where the magic happens. Experience performances that inspire\, challenge\, and resonate long after the final note. A longtime supporter and faculty member at Longy\, Ruth established this series through a legacy gift to the School\, making an exceptional contribution that will ensure this concert series continues throughout the decades. \ninn.wien is a Vienna-based collective of young\, classically trained musicians who build extraordinary programs and interpret works across genres\, with a strong chamber sensibility and genuine artistic flexibility. \nMain Stage Series\nMain Stage events are where the magic happens.
