program notes

This recital is very close to my heart; it tells the story of a Soul traveling through the stages of depression, only to come out the other side stronger and more loving than before.

This is a story of hate, fear, love, and discovery. It is a story that begs you to see yourself, and those struggling, with honest eyes. It is a prayer to stay alive and fight in this hateful, yet loveable, world. It is my story, but not just my story, because I hope it can be a small beacon of light in the darkness.
This recital is dedicated to all those who are currently suffering from depression and mental illness, and to the people to whom I owe my life: my mother, Cynthia Challener, and a previous partner, Anthony Perugini.

TRIGGER WARNING: It may be important to note that in this recital, there is much talk of depression, mania, and suicidal ideation, as well as relatively explicit staging. If you feel that this content will be too graphic for you, PLEASE protect yourself rather than putting yourself in an unsafe position. Also, audience members are welcome to exit the hall at any time should the subject matter become too upsetting.

artist biography

Marion Amelia Palmiero is a Vermont-born Soprano with a passion for using music to evoke social change, community outreach, and inspire young musicians. She is pursuing her Bachelor of Music at the Longy School of Music, where she studies with Pamela Dellal. Marion has performed across New England in  opera, operetta and musical theater productions. Most recently, she’s been seen as Kate in The Pirates of Penzance, Cherubino in scenes of Le Nozze di Figaro, the First Actress in A…My Name is Alice, and Citizen’s Chorus of The Suppliant Women at Apollinaire Theater. Marion’s graduating recital, Metamorphosis, will address the mental illness epidemic that is rampaging the United States ‒ especially our youngest generation.

Some of Marion’s favorite performances, however, have been in atypical venues; she  participates annually in Project Serenade, a collaborative effort of the Opera Company of Middlebury and the Youth Opera Company of OCM where singers perform benefit concerts in nursing homes and senior centers as a way to give back to members of the community who can’t make it to the concert hall.

Marion is also currently working on her debut album, Moon Man, in which she fuses her love of poetry and singing with piano and guitar composition. In her remaining freetime, Marion enjoys rock climbing, hiking, and collecting records.
