Tatevik Kocharyan
In the heart of Yerevan, Armenia, under the warm glow of a September sun, Tatevik embarked on her journey through life. Known affectionately as Tata to her friends, she harbored dreams that stretched far beyond the confines of her birthplace. Her childhood was filled with the grand ambitions of gracing the stage as an actress, interviewing celebrities, and skillfully answering the questions she posed to them.
Tatevik’s life took a vibrant turn when she moved from Moscow, where she had spent her entire life, to Boston. This transition marked not just a change of scenery but the beginning of a quest to find her true self. Her Armenian roots, intertwined with substantial Russian influences, painted her cultural identity with broad, colorful strokes.
Wandering through the streets of both new and old cities, especially in the company of her best friend, Nicoleta, became Tatevik’s treasured hobby. Italy and Cuba stood out as her favorite destinations, places where the essence of history and culture sparked endless curiosity and joy.
Tatevik’s educational journey was as eclectic as her interests. Starting with a Law degree from a university in Moscow, she took a bold leap towards her passion, pursuing a Master of Music in Voice Performance at the Longy School of Music. This pivot from law to music symbolized her determination to fulfill her soul’s deepest desires.
Before embracing the world of music, Tatevik honed her legal skills as an assistant and then a lawyer. However, her first job in the music industry, as a church choir member, signified the beginning of a dramatic career shift. Four years ago, she made the bold decision to leave law behind, seeking a career that satisfied her soul on a profound level.
Tatevik describes her career in music as “crazy, full, brilliant.” She found her calling in the ability to touch people’s hearts with her performances, a talent recognized and cherished by her audience. Her interpretation of opera, marked by authenticity and a deep respect for the composer’s intentions, has been her greatest accomplishment and joy.
The Witch from “Hansel and Gretel” and Lucia from “Lucia di Lammermoor” became two of her most memorable roles, where she delighted in the freedom to improvise on stage. These roles encapsulated what Tatevik loved most about her career: the opportunity to explore, embody different characters, and collaborate with talented individuals.
For Tatevik, success in the music industry is not just about perseverance but also about staying true to oneself. She believes in the power of music and text to express emotions deeply and authentically, hoping to make operatic art accessible and real to her audience. Her advice to aspiring musicians echoes her journey: love what you do, and never give up, for it is this passion that will guide you through the challenges and triumphs of a career in music.
