BORROWING POLICIES

A Longy ID is required in order to borrow materials from the Bakalar Music Library. Borrowing privileges are extended to all Longy faculty, staff, conservatory students and eligible alumni.

Loan periods (students and staff)

Type of Library Material Loan Period
Books and scores in open stacks 4 weeks
Compact discs and DVDs 1 week
Periodicals, Reference books Library use only
Reserve materials
Laptops, iPad
Headphones and other equipment
2 hours
Video cameras 24 hours

Student and Staff Renewals  Books, scores, CDs, and DVDs may be renewed up to a maximum of three times. However, a hold request placed by another patron will prevent the item from being renewed. That item must then be returned by the due date. Items may be renewed in person at the library or  online.

Loan Periods for Faculty  Circulating materials are loaned to faculty on a semester basis (fall, spring and summer).

Lost or Damaged Library Materials  Borrowers are responsible for the replacement cost of library items that are lost or damaged.

Overdue Library Materials  The Bakalar Music Library provides shared resources for the entire Longy community. Please show consideration to your colleagues and classmates by returning materials on time so that they are available to others who may need them.  All borrowed library materials should be returned by the due date, complete, and in the same condition as when borrowed.

After 21 days past the due date, borrowed items will be considered “Lost / Long overdue” and the borrower’s library account will be suspended. Borrowers will also be billed for replacement costs and an additional $10 overdue fine.

Longy Alumni Borrowing  Alumni residing in the Greater Boston Area may apply for borrowing privileges on a semester basis (spring, summer, fall). Please stop by the library office or make an appointment with the Library Director to set up a library account.

Chamber Music Group Sign-Out  Student chamber music groups working with a Longy faculty coach may sign out the scores and parts they need for an entire semester as follows:

  • One member of the ensemble (usually the group “contact”) should check out the score and set of parts for the group and obtain a Chamber Music Group Sign Out Form at the circulation desk.
  • The faculty coach and each member of the ensemble must sign the form.
  • The form should be returned to the library before the original due date.

Course Reserves  Materials placed on reserve for class assignments are kept at the library circulation desk. Course reserve lists may be found in the online catalog (Koha). Reserve items may be checked out for 2 hours.

Interlibrary Loan Services
Books, scores, recordings, and periodical articles not available in the library’s collection can in most cases be borrowed from other libraries through our interlibrary loan service. Please speak directly to library staff or contact the Library Director by email if you wish to make an interlibrary loan request. Most ILLs arrive within one to two weeks.
