Eric Schindler – Alto Saxophone, Piano, Voice

What is Jazz? An Exploration of Genres and Musical Ideas features all original music composed by Eric Schindler. This recital examines the aforementioned question by presenting pieces of music that all have elements of jazz but may not be considered jazz in the traditional sense. These compositions, which fuse jazz with other genres such as rock, pop, funk, and gospel, illustrate the permeable boundaries between genres, and the infinite opportunities to innovate. Musical ideas such as composing with common tones, repeated rhythms, tempo shifts, key changes, and using irregular pitch sets, such as the whole tone scale, are also featuredThis recital also reflects Longy’s unique culture, which both honors musical tradition and encourages experimentation.
