Longy Trumpets, with special guest Tage Larsen, present Aperture.

More often than not, the word aperture is used in the context of photography, meaning the opening through which light passes. As trumpeters, the aperture is the small opening between our vibrating lips, through which air passes as the lip vibrates. Unlike the camera, which captures light, the trumpeter’s aperture produces light, a great and resonant brightness that for thousands of years has come to symbolize and evoke a diversity of emotion, ranging from a warlike pride to introspective mourning, and even signaling the end of time. On Monday, May 2, 2022, at First Church in Cambridge, the Longy Trumpets will welcome special guest Tage Larsen (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) to present Aperture, a program of music by composers Johannes Brahms, George Enescu, Sofia Gubaidulina, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Francis Poulenc, Verne Reynolds, David Snow, and John Zorn, highlighting the range of timbral and expressive capabilities inherent in the trumpet.
