Both the Spanish composer Turina (Piano Quartet) and the Czech Dvorak (Piano Quartet #2) had distinctive voices, using folk rhythms and songs from their home countries. French composer Tailleferre (Piano Trio) was the only female member of “Lex Six,” establishing her own musical voice. This “Set of Birds” features three celebrated living female composers (Gubaidulina; Sierra; Pinto-Correia), each of whom expressed birds’ voices with a unique musical tongue.
