The ideal candidate will have proficiency in both piano and organ music; be comfortable with hymn selection coordinated with the
liturgical theme of the service (with emphasis on the 1982 Hymnal, LEVAS, Wonder, Love and Praise); planning and leading
repertoire for our adult choir; and supporting the varied musical gifts of the congregation (children and otherwise). The right
candidate will have a deep sense of humor, adaptability with regards to a volunteer choir’s gifts and needs, and an ability to
break down complicated music into teachable sections with enthusiasm. Our organ is a Woodberry & Harris tracker pipe organ
installed circa February 19, 1873.
Primary Responsibilities
• Weekly 9:30am Sunday service (yearlong), with choir rehearsals on Sunday mornings from 8:30-9:15am, and one monthly

• Select hymns and offerings for services in coordination with the clergy and choir; meet quarterly to plan seasonal liturgies

JourneySongs is an interfaith hospice choir located in Newton, Massachusetts. Committed to singing at bedside for the comfort
of people on their final journey, we sing in private homes, local nursing homes, hospitals, hospice facilities and local memorial
services. We sing for the terminally ill, those with serious illness, and for caregivers and loved ones.
We believe in the healing power of music and the importance of community presence during life’s transitions, choosing songs

it includes chants, rounds, spirituals, hymns, and classical music.
JourneySongs invites applications for the position of Music Director, who guides in bedside sings, and the group’s musical

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead rehearsals twice per month on Sunday afternoons (3:30 – 5 p.m.) in Newton
• Lead bedside “sings” in a number of contexts: hospice facilities, private homes, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.
• Coordinate performances at memorial services and outreach singing
• Create a nurturing, supportive, and empathic learning environment with high musical expectations
• Actively participate with the Steering Committee to strategize in the areas of membership, marketing, budget, and space needs
• Collaborate with Team Leaders to streamline the learning and polishing of music
• Proactively communicate internally and externally about bedside sings and performances
• Share strategies for singing without books, from heart not head
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Music (voice, music education, or related field)
• Demonstrated ability and interest in adult and “aging” vocal pedagogy, choral techniques, and diverse instructional strategies
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work as a member of a team
• Sensitivity to spiritual aspects of music-making and an empathic approach to bedside singing
