Flute Day Schedule - Saturday, December 12, 2020
Baroque Repertoire on the Modern Flute
9-11 am ET on Zoom
Interactive Masterclass
Na'ama Lion, flute and Historical Performance faculty
Hone your skills and knowledge of the Baroque repertoire, whether you play modern or Baroque flute! This session will begin with a short presentation on stylistically appropriate ornamentation, followed by a masterclass for performers on both modern and Baroque flute (concentrating on Baroque repertory). Topics may include: rhetoric, articulation, dance rhythms, tempo, and learn how to use them to bring Baroque music to life in the Twenty-First Century.
Peak Performance Under Pressure
11:30 am-1:30 pm ET on Zoom
Interactive Masterclass
Vanessa Breault Mulvey, flute, chamber music, and body mapping faculty
What happens to you when you step into the spotlight and it's time to perform? Do nerves and worries, undermine your preparation and musical ideas? This master class will explore how to organize mind and body for peak performance. You will learn what it means to be grounded, how it feels, and experience it in your playing. We will explore how acknowledging fear is the first step to owning your performance, bringing to life your musical intentions.
BREAK
1:30-2:30 pm ET
"Our Revels Now Are Ended"
2:30-4:30 pm ET on Zoom
Interactive Masterclass
Sooyun Kim, flute faculty
Many musicians have been using this time of solitude to revisit etude and scale books to strengthen techniques and foundations. But what are we practicing for? We spend so much time practicing that we often neglect the purpose of our performances.
In this masterclass, we will survey the similarities and differences between how actors and musicians prepare for performances. As a case study, we will talk about different adaptations and interpretations of “Our Revels now are ended” from Shakespeare’s play, “The Tempest”. Then, we will explore various ways in which we can apply some of the discoveries in our own solo flute repertoire.
Storytelling: Sound and Soul
5-7 pm ET on Zoom
Interactive Masterclass
Sergio Pallottelli, flute faculty
One of the greatest joys of being a musician is the aspect of individuality and artistic expression. In this masterclass, the primary focus will be on telling stories through sound in traditional and contemporary repertoire: concertos, sonatas, solo pieces, and orchestral excerpts. Come prepared to explore tone color, phrasing, and thoughtful interpretation to set your playing apart from the crowd.
