At Longy’s Divergent Studio you’ll experience a whirlwind week where composition and performance intersect in new and exciting ways. Let renowned Longy faculty guide you down new paths towards boundless opportunities.

Pre-formed ensembles and individual performers have the option of studying chamber music masterworks with the Neave Trio or contemporary chamber works with loadbang. No matter which you choose, you will plunge into an intensive week led by two of today’s leading ensembles.

For composers, the opportunities are rich—work closely with Longy’s composition faculty and hear your music performed by Divergent Studio performers, along with the Neave Trio and loadbang.

loadbang Contemporary Chamber Connection

Study with the world class faculty of the 2017 Longy Contemporary Chamber Music Institute that includes the members of one of the country’s most active new music ensembles, loadbang, in addition to pianist Donald Berman. Loadbang’s member include bass clarinetist Carlos Cordeiro, vocalist Jeffrey Gavett, trumpeter Andy Kozar, and trombonist William Lang. Participants will have daily coachings, student and faculty performances, and seminars on subjects including atonal and microtonal ear training, performing with electronics, complex rhythms, grant writing, and career development.

Neave Trio Next Generation Chamber Exchange

Spend a week in historic Cambridge, Massachusetts, just outside Iconic Harvard Square, rehearsing and performing with the internationally acclaimed Neave Trio. Participants will experience playing in an ensemble with Trio members as well as daily lessons, coachings, masterclasses and seminars geared towards the needs of young musicians. The week will culminate in a public performance at the Longy School of Music of Bard College. 

Divergent Composition Workshop

Longy's Divergent Studio offers a unique experience which enables participants to work closely with world-class faculty composers as well as collaborate with new music ensemble extraordinaire, loadbang, and the dynamic Neave Trio.  This week-long chamber music intensive offers opportunities to have your music performed in Divergent concerts, network with other participants, and hear daily performances by Divergent students and faculty. 

Program highlights:  

  • Hear your music performed by members of loadbang and/or the Neave Trio
  • Coaching with Divergent faculty 
  • Composition lessons/small group masterclasses with Divergent Composition faculty
  • Daily workshops covering both analytical and compositional topics

Regular Registration: $700

All accepted students must make a deposit via Paypal of $200. 

Accommodations

Students who need accommodations may stay in the dorms at Lesley University, which is approximately a 5-minute walk from Longy. According to demand housing can be arranged at Lesley University. Learn more
