Thomas Enman, opera
Thomas Enman is a pianist, coach, and music director who has performed and given master classes internationally. At the Longy School of Music of Bard College, he has prepared a large number of operas including world and American premieres of works composed by Nancy Van de Vate and the New England premiere of Amy Beach’s Cabildo. The Longy Opera Department has also collaborated with the Boston Classical Orchestra in several concerts at Faneuil Hall.
The Boston Globe has referred to his playing as, “…at all times able, adroit, and compassionate.” Mr. Enman is the former president of the Boston Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. He is currently a member of the College Music Society, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Pi Kappa Lambda. In March of 2006 he was named a National Arts Associate by Sigma Alpha Iota, and in 2008 he presented a lecture-recital for the Boston chapter titled, "American Wagnerian Composers."
In March of 2008, he returned to the University of Montana for a highly successful week-long residency of coaching, opera scenes assistance, and as a master class teacher. In the spring of 2009, he presented a lecture-recital with his students titled "Carl Maria von Weber - Beyond the Wolf's Glen." In 2010, Enman presented a lecture-recital with his students on the songs and piano music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk and master classes for Wheaton College and Ohio Wesleyan in Salzburg. In January of 2011, he collaborated with violinist Hartmut Ometzberger and soprano Diana Jacklin in a recital at the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York and appeared in a recital with them the following season. Most recently, Mr. Enman was music director for the North End Music and Performing Art’s production of Carmen. His students have appeared in major productions of music theatre and opera internationally.
From 1988 to 2002, Mr. Enman was Music Director of Operafest, in collaboration with Donna Roll. The two have also concertized internationally. Mr. Enman has been on the faculties of the North Shore Community College Center for the Arts and the New England Conservatory as adjunct faculty for Lesley College. He has toured Central America three times for the U.S. State Department.
For the past nine summers, he has been a vocal coach for the University of Miami Frost School of Music Salzburg Program in Austria, where he is highly regarded for his success in working with young singers.
Mr. Enman holds degrees with honors from the University of Montana and Boston University.
