Robert Merfeld, piano, collaborative piano


Mr. Merfeld received his training at Oberlin Conservatory where he was awarded a B.M., and subsequently was granted an M.M. from the Julliard School as a scholarship student of Beveridge Webster. His primary childhood teacher was the eminent pianist Leonid Hambro.

During his career, he has performed solo, concerti and chamber music concerts throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia and South America. Performing venues have included Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, Jordan Hall in Boston, the Library of Congress, Gardner Museum, Merkin Hall and summer festivals such as Aspen, Carramoor, Marlboro and Ravinia.

He is currently on the faculties of Boston University, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and the Longy School of Music of Bard College. He has taught, as well, at Dartmouth, Harvard and Marlboro Colleges, and the Tong-Il Han Piano Institute in Korea. 

He was a founding member of the Apple Hill Chamber Players with whom he toured nationally and internationally for over 20 years and taught at the Center for Chamber Music where the group was in residence during that time.

Over the years he has collaborated with numerous prominent artists including singers Jan de Gaetani, Lucy Shelton, Dawn Upshaw, as well as violinists Stanley Ritchie and Arnold Steinhardt, clarinetist Charles Neiditch, and violist James Dunham. He has also appeared with ensembles such as the Philadelphia, Mendelssohn and Muir Quartets. He has recorded on the Centaur and Sin Qua Nonlabels and appeared frequently on radio stations such as WGBH in Boston, WQXR in New York and Jerusalem Radio.

Recently, he has turned increasingly to composition, writing a set of Animal Miniatures for Viola & Piano which was commissioned and recorded by Michelle LaCourse and Martin Amlin, a Nocturne for Oboe & Viola, which was commissioned and premiered by Katherine Murdock and Mark Hill at the University of Maryland, and a set of 12 Miniatures for String Quartet dedicated to the Muir Quartet.

Mr. Merfeld’s Thoughts on Teaching Chamber Music is due to be published this spring. The book has already received accolades from musicians such as Richard Goode (“This is a refreshing, wide-ranging and imaginative book.”) and Arnold Steinhardt (“This book is peppered with gems of thoughtfulness, originality, and wisdom.”)
