Longy Students to Perform in BYSO’s Otello
January 21, 2016
By Todd McNeel, GPD candidate, Opera
One of the great benefits of being a Longy student is having the opportunity to perform not only through the conservatory, but also in the Greater Boston area. Longy's faculty encourages students to become involved in the Boston music community, where emerging musicians like myself can make connections that will last long after I finish my studies at Longy. In part due to this encouragement and realistic approach to training, you'll find many Longy students fully taking advantage of Boston's audition circuit—and often being quite successful.
On Sunday, January 24, I am proud to represent Longy, along with my colleague Joel Edwards, in the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra Chorus for a one-night only performance of Verdi's Otello at Harvard’s Sanders Theatre. Under the baton of Maestro Federico Cortese, the BYSO has been recognized as one of Boston's leading presenters of opera, with numerous sold out performances.
The BYSO is comprised of some of Boston's most talented youth in grades K-12. These young musicians are coached and trained by top educators and musicians in the Boston Area, performing more advanced repertoire than you would typically find in a youth ensemble. Don't let their age or size fool you—these young professional musicians-in-training play well enough to accompany a chorus of professional singers from Boston's four conservatories and principal singers from international opera houses such as The Met, La Scala, and The Royal Opera House.
Otello is known as one of Verdi’s grandest operas. As a 22-year-old first-year master’s student, I am extremely thrilled and humbled to perform such a dynamic piece of art. It’s been a terrific learning experience to work with some of the classical music world’s most notable conductors and singers, as well as emerging artists from other institutions in the area. And it’s also tremendously rewarding to know that the skills I am learning in my voice lessons and Opera Studio courses at Longy transfer directly to helping me in the audition room and on the performance stage.
