5 Things You Didn't Know About The Horszowski Trio

November 15, 2016

Here’s what you probably know. The Horszowski Trio takes its name from acclaimed Polish-American pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski, and the trio’s pianist Reiko Aizawa was his last student at the Curtis Institute. Horszowski studied with Theodor Leschetizky in Vienna, and Leschetizky studied with Carl Czerny. And Czemy, of scalar and arpeggio fame, studied with Ludwig van Beethoven.

So there you are—that’s probably what you knew already. Right? Well here’s more to get you in the mood for their November 18 concert here at Longy, “Immortal Beethoven, Home in Vienna.”

1) Award-Winning Runs in the Family
The trio’s cellist, Raman, is the son of a Nobel prize-winner. His father, Venki, won the Nobel prize in chemistry in 2009, solving the structure of the Ribosome. Here is a photo of Raman in front of his dad’s picture at Brookhaven National Labs, where his father is celebrated.

2) They’re Handy
Jesse, the trio’s Grammy-nominated violinist worked as assistant carpenter for his work-study job while he was a student at Juilliard. He still enjoys doing construction projects around the house.  Here is his latest work, putting a grille on the bench in his apartment (which he shares with his wife, Rieko!)

3) Do Not Try This at Home
While they were students at Juilliard together, Raman and Jesse became fascinated by an abandoned subway station on Manhattan's west side. Late one night, they jumped down to the tracks at a neighboring stop and walked to the abandoned station, satisfying their curiosity once and for all! Joining their subway passion, Rieko purchased this NYC subway sign at a thrift store in Connecticut several years back (very cheap). This is a historical sign from the Times Square station which you won't find anymore... the Q-diamond, 7-diamond, W, and 9 trains no longer exist!

4) They Make Time for Tea
The trio’s pianist, Rieko, is passionate about tea, especially black tea.  Whenever she travels to Europe (and to certain American cities), she collects loose-leaf tea. Here is a photo of part of her collection.

5) They Take Time Out Together
The trio enjoy time together off the stage too. They recently caught comedian Louis C.K. at New York City Center.
