Longy Hosts Inaugural YMC Academy

This August, children from El Sistema nucleos came together for two weeks of music-making and friendship as part of Longy's Youth Music Collaborative Academy. Hosted by Longy and three Boston area partner schools — Josiah Quincy School, Sistema Somerville, and Conservatory Lab Charter School — the camp introduced 50 students to the El Sistema 'seminario' style of intensive learning experiences. From dance, to yoga, to choir, and orchestra, and meals, the students lived and breathed music together for over 8 hours each day.

“The purpose of the Academy is really very simple,” says program director Miriam Eckelhoefer. “We want to bring students into the fold of a larger community. We want to see friendships develop between kids from different parts of the city, and see the Academy as a long-term investment in building these relationships. We also see it as a long-term investment in the future of classical music. These students are the next generation of performers and audience members.”
